STABILITY

What have we done?

Kona has, believe it or not, become the first company in the
industry to analyze one of the most important parameters
within stand-up paddling. Stability has a major impact in the
choice of board and we want the customer to find the right
board easier than ever before. When introducing the stability
number the customer can easily compare boards and find the
right one for their ability and needs.

What is board stability?
Stability is the ability of the board to resist heeling and capsize. A
board with low stability makes it more challenging to stand on, but
often carries some performance benefits. A board with High stability
makes paddling easier, but sometimes slower less efficient.

Why Analyse the Stability?

Different people have different abilities of stability and different
preferences on performance vs ‘easy of use’. The Stability of each
individual board can be calculated, this can then be used when
choosing the correct board for your body type and ability level.

How do we Calculate Stability?
Stability can be calculated from the shape of the board and the
center of gravity. Using Naval Architecture principles and computer
3D models of all our boards we are able to create an accurate calculation
for the Stability and hydrodynamic characteristics of each
board.

GLIDE

What have we done?

Not only have we introduced a way to compare boards easily, we
have also made a resistance analysis to find the glide of each board.
This will showcase the boards glide and give a better understanding
of the board. Depending on preferred activity, yoga or long distance
paddling the glide ratio has an impact or the boards’ performance.

What Is glide?
Glide is a term we use to talk about the ease of paddling. The higher
the glide number the easier the board is to paddle and vs versa.

Why is Glide Important?

The glide number is a ratio of volume to length and is important because this helps to choose which board is right together with your
stability number. The longest narrowest boards have the highest glide ability’s.

How do we calculate Glide ? Using 3D models of our boards and Naval Architect computer analysis methods, we calculate the glide number. This is then used to optimize designs make changes in Volume distributions, lengths, widths and rocker lines.
